Nigel Holly

Founder

Nigel Holly leads Future Leaders California, empowering at-risk youth through mentorship and life coaching. With an MBA and over 20 years of experience in writing, performing, and coaching, he integrates strategic planning, leadership, and community advocacy in youth development. A resident of Antelope Valley, Nigel founded the Antelope Valley Education Alliance, which grew from an anti-truancy initiative to a comprehensive youth support network. Through Future Leaders California, he champions inclusivity, leadership, and role modeling to help youth succeed. Nigel serves in leadership roles for organizations like the California Association of Youth Courts and the California Health Institute of Social Services. He’s coordinated the LA County Teen Court program and served as a liaison to the U.S. Department of Justice. Honored with multiple awards, including two Presidential Service Awards, he’s also the author of The Four E’s of Life Coaching. A father of four, Nigel is committed to shaping future leaders and fostering community change.

Bishop Henry Hearns

Chairman of Board

Bishop Henry Hearns is a trailblazer in both public service and engineering. In 1960, he made history as the first African American Civil Engineer hired by the United States Government Soil Conservation Service, breaking racial barriers in the field. His dedication to service extended to local government, where he became the first African American elected to the Lancaster City Council. Over his 18-year tenure, he served two terms as Mayor, championing initiatives that improved the city’s infrastructure and community development. Beyond his civic leadership, Bishop Hearns serves as the Chaplain for Legacy Edutainment Corporation, providing spiritual guidance and mentorship. His academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Tennessee State University and a Master’s in Engineering from the University of Southern California. With a lifelong commitment to service, leadership, and faith, Bishop Hearns continues to inspire and uplift communities through his work and dedication.

Teresa Howard

Vice Chair | Education Specialist

Teresa Howard is the Director of Career Technical Education and Post-Secondary Partnerships at the Antelope Valley Union High School District. She has held various leadership roles, including Career Technical Education Coordinator, Vice Principal, and Instructional Coach. With a Bachelor’s in English from CSU Bakersfield and a Master’s in Educational Administration & Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington, she is dedicated to education and student success. Teresa actively serves her community as a board member for AV Edge and volunteers at her church. She previously served on an advisory committee for the Palmdale Sheriff’s Department and was a longtime board member of ACSA Region XV, where she was twice recognized as Co-Administrator of the Year (2017, 2020). On August 1st, she will be sworn in as a Director for AV Edge, continuing her commitment to educational and community advancement.

Jennifer Sanchez

Secretary | Deputy Director

Jennifer Sanchez was appointed Deputy Director in 2023, bringing a passion for community service and social equity. A 2018 graduate of Antelope Valley High School, she became deeply involved in extracurricular activities that served her community, including Justice Sunday and Teen Court. In her junior year, she joined Justice Sunday and later played a key role in uniting its alumni, eventually serving as Vice President of the Justice Sunday Alumni (JSA) in 2021. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Justice Studies with a Minor in Psychology from California State University, Northridge, in May 2022. During college, Jennifer discovered her purpose—advocating for at-promise youth and working toward social equity, diversion, and inclusion. Her dedication to these causes drives her leadership, and she continues to make a meaningful impact through her role as Deputy Director and Secretary, working to create opportunities for underserved communities.

LaQuenta Martin

Board Member

Dr. LaQuenta Martin, a third-generation educator from Southern California, brings over 20 years of experience teaching diverse student populations and serving as a high school district administrator. She is also a dedicated military service member and an expert Emotional Intelligence Coach, helping leaders plan, flourish, and progress. Through her engaging personality, published books, and P3 Life services, she connects with the community, serving on advisory boards, scholastic councils, and charitable foundations. Recognized for her work in mental wellness, she has been featured in magazines for her ability to help others achieve inner balance. Dr. Martin holds master’s degrees in Business Administration and Educational Leadership and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities in 2023. Her mission-driven approach blends education, leadership, and service, empowering individuals to reach their full potential.

Akiko Tio

Director of Communications

In 2023, Akiko L. Tio was named Director of Communications for Future Leaders California (FLC), where she brings her strong communication skills and passion for community service. Akiko graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 2021, where she dedicated her entire high school career to the AVHS Choir, NJROTC, and the Justice Sunday program. Her dedication to Justice Sunday continued post-graduation, earning her the role of Music Director for the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative, where she continues to make a significant impact. In addition to her professional commitments, Akiko is currently pursuing a degree in Nursing, focusing on healthcare while balancing her studies with her community service efforts. Her involvement with FLC and the Justice Sunday program exemplifies her commitment to giving back, and she strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others through both her education and volunteer work.

Anouk Glosson-Harvey

Director of Human Resources

Anouk Glosson-Harvey was named Director of Human Resources in 2023, bringing her dedication to social equity and education into her leadership role. While attending the University of California, Los Angeles, Ms. Glosson-Harvey developed a strong passion for law, particularly as it relates to social justice and educational reform. During her time as a Bruin, she actively participated in organizations such as Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International, the UCLA International Collegiate Health Initiative, and several academic support programs. In these roles, she served as an advisor, advocate, and mentor, gaining valuable experience in leadership and advocacy. Today, as an elementary school teacher and a member of the City of Lancaster Social Equity Commission, Ms. Glosson-Harvey continues her commitment to promoting reform and equity through education. Her work emphasizes the importance of accessible, fair opportunities for all, ensuring that students and communities are empowered to thrive.

India Schmidt

Director of Humanities

India Schmidt was named Director of Humanities in 2023, where she took the lead on FLC’s youth and community outreach initiatives. A 2021 graduate of Eastside High School, India was elected President of the Justice Sunday Alumni that same year. It was during high school that she first participated in the Justice Sunday program, which sparked her ongoing dedication to community service. Since graduating, India has continued to work with the high school district, ensuring that current students have access to the same opportunities that helped her thrive. In addition to her work with Justice Sunday and Future Leaders, India is a Girl Scout Troop Leader, further enriching her local community. She is also pursuing her academic goals as a full-time student at California State University, Bakersfield, where she is majoring in Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies, aiming to make a lasting impact on the lives of young people and families.

Joseph Ramirez

Director of Finance

Joseph E. Ramirez serves as the Director of Finance at Future Leaders California, bringing a wealth of experience from his previous role as an Investment Analyst at a middle-market private equity firm, where he specialized in financial analysis and valuation modeling. In 2023, Joseph graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Business Administration (Finance) from Morehouse College, earning induction into Beta Gamma Sigma for his academic excellence. Beyond his professional achievements, Joseph is a passionate advocate for the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative. His dedication to the program led him to co-found the Justice Sunday Alumni Association, and he also contributed as an actor in the Justice Sunday productions of Hidden Figures (2017) and Epiphany (2018). Joseph’s commitment to both finance and the arts reflects his multifaceted approach to leadership, blending business acumen with a strong passion for community engagement and artistic expression.

Andrea Cano

Supervising Educational Life Coach

Andrea Cano has been dedicated to supporting students in the Antelope Valley for over a decade. Since 2012, she has been a valued member of Antelope Valley High School, and since 2023, she has also contributed her expertise to Future Leaders California. Her commitment to working with young people began with California Psych Care, assisting autistic clients. Building upon this foundation, Andrea earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Psychology, followed by a Master’s degree in Educational Counseling with an emphasis on Social Justice in Higher Education. Her diverse background also includes six years of service in the United States Army as an Aviation Operations Specialist.

Ava Kent

Educational Life Coach

Ava Kent has been involved with the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative for three years, where she took on a leading role in writing during her senior year of high school. Following her graduation, Ava seamlessly transitioned into her current role as a Writing Coach, continuing her commitment to the program. Now a third-year college student, Ava is pursuing a major in Biology with a minor in Psychology. Her academic path is driven by her ultimate goal of becoming a physician, with a focus on both Sports Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Ava’s dedication to both her studies and her work with the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative showcases her passion for helping others and her drive to make a meaningful impact in the medical field.

Bayle Glosson-Harvey

JSAI Vice President

Bayle Glosson-Harvey is a recent graduate of SOAR High School and is now continuing her education at California State University Fullerton, where she is majoring in Communicative Disorders and minoring in Child and Adolescent Development. Passionate about helping youth, Bayle has volunteered with Change Lanes for the past two years, a program dedicated to assisting children with anger issues. Her commitment to justice and community service began in her junior year when she joined Justice Sunday. Recently, she was appointed Vice President of the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative Program, further demonstrating her leadership and dedication to empowering young people. Bayle’s focus on academics, along with her extensive volunteer work, highlights her strong passion for making a positive impact in her community and supporting the growth and development of youth. Her academic pursuits and service work reflect her ongoing commitment to helping others thrive.

Charisse Sims

Educational Life Coach

Charisse Sims is an award-winning educator, parent podcaster, author, and nationally recognized speaker dedicated to advancing youth leadership, literacy, and equitable education. Named a PBS Early Learning Champion, Charisse has spent over a decade creating access to resources that empower children, families, and educators. As co-founder of the Sims Library of Poetry, she transformed her preschool into a library to address gaps in literacy and representation, building programs where students and educators publish culturally relevant children’s books. Through this work, she has touched hundreds of young lives, ensuring that diverse voices and stories reach classroom bookshelves.

Her work embodies Future Leaders California’s mission of building a pipeline of leaders rooted in equity, resilience, and community. With passion, creativity, and vision, Charisse equips the next generation with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive as changemakers in California and beyond.

Ginger Carruthers

JSAI Choreographer

Ginger has been a dedicated member of the Arts Initiative for five years, though her passion for performing arts spans nine years of singing and eleven years of dancing. Known for her high energy, positive outlook, and enthusiasm, Ginger brings these qualities to each new group of youth she works with every year. During the 2022-2023 season, she took on the role of choreographer and continues to put her heart into helping students excel. She dedicates her winter break from college to the program, fully immersing herself in the work. Currently a student at California State University, Los Angeles, Ginger is majoring in Music, furthering her knowledge and skills in the field. Outside of her studies, she also volunteers her time to Future Leaders California, assisting with other programs and events throughout the year, continually giving back to her community and supporting the growth of young people.

Jamil Smith

Educational Life Coach

With over 20 years in education, Jamil Smith has dedicated his career to mentoring students and athletes. He began as a substitute teacher across three districts (AVUHSD, PSD, and LAUSD), working with diverse student populations, including at-risk & high at-risk youth, Honors/AP students, and elite student-athletes who have gone on competed at the collegiate and professional levels. Jamil’s commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom. In his early career, he played a key role in shaping student organizations like Rising Stars, a college-bound program that supports high school student pursuit to college Universities. His leadership has helped raise funds and secure scholarships, opening doors for students to pursue higher education. A former California State Champion, high school All-American, and PAC-12 honoree in track and field, Jamil earned his B.A. in Criminal Law from Washington State University and a Master’s in Sports Science/Sports Medicine from USSA. He is passionate about fostering a championship mindset, empowering students to excel in academics, athletics, and life.

Jayla Hightower

Acting Coach

Jayla Hightower has long been dedicated to youth empowerment, education, and the arts. After joining Justice Sunday in 2023, she became an Acting Coach in 2024. With 24 stage plays and 10 years of theater experience, Jayla has honed her skills in the performing arts. Over the past two years, she has shared her knowledge by directing plays and coaching high school students in acting. She is deeply involved in the Antelope Valley’s theatre community, using the stage as a platform for creativity and self-expression. In addition to her work in the arts, Jayla is a history major at Antelope Valley College, focusing on U.S. history, African-American studies, and ancient European civilizations. She aspires to become a high school history teacher, aiming to bring energy and excitement back to the classroom. Alongside her studies, Jayla works with Future Leaders California, guiding youth toward personal growth and community impact.

Jazmyn Martinez

Communications Coordinator

Jazmyn Martinez began her journey with the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative in the 2020-2021 season and graduated from high school in 2023. With a passion for singing that began before she could even talk, Jazmyn’s natural talent and love for music led her to become the Assistant Music Director. Her dedication to the arts has been a driving force in her life, and she continues to inspire others through her work. In addition to her role with the Arts Initiative, Jazmyn serves as the Communications Coordinator and Educational Life Coach for the CAAP Program at Future Leaders California. In this capacity, she mentors high school students, focusing on academics and attendance, and helping them stay on track for success. Jazmyn’s commitment to both music and education shines through in her leadership, as she works to support and empower the next generation of students and artists in her community.

Journey Artis

JSAI Secretary

Journey Artis is a recent high school graduate of Soar High School, having also attained dual associate degrees from Antelope Valley College. Set to embark on her undergraduate journey in psychology at the University of San Francisco, Journey will also simultaneously enroll in law school during the 2025-2026 academic year. Passionate about social justice and activism, she strives to cultivate community wherever she goes. With a deep-seated commitment to aiding others, Journey aspires to pursue a career as a psychological researcher and civil rights attorney. For the past three years, she has actively participated in the Justice Sunday and Teen Talk programs. Most recently she has been appointed to the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative board as the Secretary and eagerly anticipates connecting with fellow alumni and participants in their positive contributions to the community.

Marcus Bonner

Educational Life Coach

A proud alumnus of Eastside High School, Marcus Bonner was part of the school’s first graduating class and a former football player. His hard work and dedication on the field earned him a football scholarship to lowa University, where he earned his degree in Exercise Science & Wellness. Today, Marcus

is an Educational Life Coach with a passion for helping students unlock their full potential. Drawing from his experience as a student-athlete, mentor, and coach, he works with youth to build confidence, set meaningful goals, and create balanced, purpose-driven lifestyles. Marcus is committed to equipping young people with the tools they need to thrive-both in and out of the classroom. His mission is to inspire growth, resilience, and direction in every student he serves.

Maya Salas

Educational Life Coach

Maya Salas graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 2019, where she served as cheer captain and assisted with multiple athletic programs. She also took part in Justice Sunday, an initiative that deepened her passion for collaboration and making a positive impact. Her long-term involvement in Mock Trial throughout high school and college strengthened her communication, leadership, and advocacy skills. 

Maya’s studies at Grand Canyon University fueled her drive to make a difference in people’s lives. She currently serves as the Community Outreach and Media Representative for the Antelope Valley Rugby Club, helping cultivate an environment that supports both physical and mental strength.

Passionate about uplifting others, Maya strives to be a source of encouragement and positive change in her hometown. She dedicates herself to spaces that help youth build confidence and a sense of belonging.

Taino Moreno

Government Affairs Officer | JSAI Treasurer

Taino Moreno was appointed Treasurer of the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative in 2024. His journey in leadership began with the Black Student Union, where he made history by becoming the first person from the Antelope Valley to be elected Regional and State President of the United Black Student Unions of California. In the same year, he led Highland High School’s Black Knowledge Bowl Team to First Place, marking the school’s first-ever victory in this competition. His involvement with the Black Student Unions opened doors to various organizations, including Future Leaders California, the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative, National College Resources Foundation, and the Black College Expo. Taino’s passion for social justice and policy has shaped his commitment to community service, and he plans to continue his work in these fields at Howard University, where he will further his education in the fall of 2024. Taino’s leadership and advocacy continue to make a positive impact on his community.

Valeria Sanchez Medina

JSAI President

Valeria Sanchez-Medina has been actively involved with the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative for three years, beginning as a volunteer during her senior year at Antelope Valley High School. Since graduating in 2023, she has remained deeply committed to the program, and in June 2024, she was honored with the role of Justice Sunday Alumni President. In addition to her work with Justice Sunday, Valeria is a second-year student at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she is pursuing a major in PsychoBiology. Her long-term goal is to enter the medical field, where she hopes to combine her scientific knowledge with her passion for helping others. Valeria’s dedication to the Justice Sunday Arts Initiative, along with her academic pursuits, showcases her commitment to both personal growth and community service. Through her leadership and volunteer efforts, she continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others while working toward her future career in healthcare.
